SHOPIAN: Suicide by a woman evoked massive protests in Shopian district of south Kashmir where people alleged it to be a murder.
Official sources said Rabia Akhter was rushed to hospital in a very critical condition after she allegedly consumed poison at her in-laws house at Bonapora, Shopian.
She was declared brought dead in the hospital, they said adding that doctors confirmed the cause of death as poisoning.
However, her family, along with neighbours, at Aishmuqam alleged that she was poisoned by her in-laws, who were allegedly harassing her for the past some time.
Police later registered an FIR after massive protests by people, demanding arrest of her in-laws.
Station House Officer of police station Shopian Irshad Ahmad Reshi said a case has been registered and investigation initiated.
However, he said if Rabia’s family take it to be a case of abetment to suicide, they should come forward and record their statements.
