SRINAGAR: Barely eight hours after women folk staged a protest in Srinagar’s Padshahibagh as per the Hurriyat program on Tuesday, nocturnal raid by “cops in civvies” detained local six local youth, the residents said.
While narrating the night-time terror, the local told Kashmir Life that around 12am, some twenty police and paramilitary vehicles pulled over in Padshahibagh.
“Some cops wearing Khan dress barged into homes and thrashed everyone—elders, women and children,” said a local wishing anonymity. “They even fired tear-gas canisters inside homes and locked the inmates inside.”
The locals say around six houses were raided. While the two families escaped wrath by raising alarm, the other four became the target, they said.
“Cops detained six youth—Ashiq Hussain Dar, Riyaz Khan, Shabir Khan, Imtiyaz Khan, Naseer Ahmad and other,” the local said. “They were lodged in Rajbagh Police Station where we learnt this morning they were ruthlessly beaten. They need immediate medical treatment, but police is adamant to let them go.”
After the raid and subsequent detentions, protests broke out in Padshahibagh that continued till Wednesday morning.
Notably, Kashmir police chief IGP SJM Gillani said on Tuesday during his two-day south Kashmir tour that nocturnal raids will continue in Kashmir. Already, the raids have created panicky situation around Kashmir forcing locals in several parts to remain on night patrol.
The locals staged protest in Padshahibagh Wednesday against the raid and demanded immediate release of the youth.
