SRINAGAR: Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) Tuesday said that SKIMS lab which was hugely funded by US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has failed in their key objectives of surveillance and research.
In a statement President DAK himself an H1N1 expert said that effective surveillance of detection and containment of H1N1 would have prevented current outbreak in the valley.
SKIMS failed to give early warnings of potential threat of H1N1 outbreak which could have prevented loss of lives. SKIMS failed to assist doctors and hospitals in dealing with H1N1 and no public awareness was made which could have prevented the spread of the virus in community. The SKIMS research lab has made no effort to observe any change in H1N1 and find out whether possible drifted strain is matching current vaccine, he said,
Vaccination is the only tool to fight against H1N1 which will reduce the likelihood of severe outcomes like hospitalizations and deaths. Anti-virals are the second line of defense and should be started within 48 hours of beginning of flu symptoms in severe and high risk cases as early treatment would reduce the risk of dying and anti-virals become more important if circulating viruses are different from vaccine, he added.
Dr Hassan alleged SKIMS authorities are misleading people as the research project is on papers only and on ground no work has been done which is the root cause of current H1N1 mess.
