SRINAGAR: Police have arrested a young woman in Anantnag and charged her with attempted murder for having allegedly been part of stone-pelting mobs during the 2010 summer unrest in Kashmir.
According to senior police officers, Zahida Akhtar, who was taken into custody on Friday, is also charged with inciting protests.
The womans brother, Adil Ahmed Dar, denied the police claim and said that his sister had been hit by a police bullet and had to drop out of school.
I took her to the police station after police came to my shop and said she was wanted for an inquiry. When we reached there, they simply arrested her, he said.
This is even worse than jungle rule. First they (government forces) almost made her an invalid. Now, after two years theyve arrested her, he said.
Separatist leaders have come out strongly against Akhtars arrest, with Syed Ali Shah Geelani terming it as police madness, and Muhamad Yasin Malik saying that it was another instance of state terrorism.
Geelani said that the state was relentlessly pursuing youth for the unrest, but had not prosecuted even a single police or forces member in the nearly 118 deaths by firing during the upsurge.
