SRINAGAR: With outraged India clamouring to hang the perpetrators of the recent Delhi gang-rape, the J and K State Womens Commission (SWC) on Friday said that it too would press for the death penalty in such crimes, or punishment by chemical castration.
Weve prepared a detailed report and recommendations to government and will forward it very soon. Weve demanded that the punishment of this heinous offence should be capital punishment or chemical castration, the chairperson of the Commission, Shamima Firdous, said.
We have also recommended that such offences should be tried by special family courts having female judges and lawyers so that victim do not suffer more humiliation and insult, and that it should be a fast track trail, Firdous, who is also a member of the legislative assembly, said.
The commission also wants results of medical tests of victim and offender to be deemed as sufficient evidence to prove the guilt in the court of law.
The offence of rape or attempt to rape is a crime not just against an individual but a crime which destroys the basic equilibrium of society. A victim of rape (is) considered to have lost her honourable reputation and place in society, a loss of honour which entails shame on the woman’s family group as well, she said.
In various cases pressure has existed which has led the victim to commit suicide after becoming a victim of rape, she said.
