SRINAGAR: In total disregard to its own safety norms Airports Authority of India has been dumping solid waste and debris in a deep gorge falling between Airport Road and Police Headquarter at Hunhama.
The Chief Sanitation Officer, SMC along with the representatives of State Pollution Control Board conducted a joint inspection of the area Monday following complaints by the concerned citizens.
During the inspection, it was found that more than 400 metric tons of solid waste, mostly consisting of non-biodegradable material, has been dumped in the gorge not far from the airport.
SMC later served notice to Airport Authority of India for mismanagement of solid waste and dumping of solid waste / debris in the open area.
“Such an unlawful act is a potential hazard for planes flying from the airport as waste can attract birds in the sensitive area which can hamper aerial travel.
The SMC has taken strong note of this mismanagement and concerned officer of AAI has been summoned for the purpose”, said SMC commissioner Dr Qasba.(CNS)
