SRINAGAR: Hundreds of residents of Padshahi Bagh area of Srinagar appeared in the Press Enclave on Monday and blocked traffic for hours. The protestors, including men, women and children alleged that police has failed to nab the culprits responsible for the murder of 16 years old Zahid Iqbal Bhat.
The protestors carrying banners and placards seeking justice and immediate arrest of the culprits blamed police of inaction and said that some police officials were trying to hush-up the case.
Wailing women and agitated men even manhandled some policemen present there but latter exercised restraint.
Protestors after staging protest blocked traffic and staged a sit-in on the busy Residency road which resulted in traffic jam.
It was only after an hour that police managed to pacify the protestors who later on dispersed peacefully.
Police called some of the family members to the police station and assured them that the case would be investigated on fast track basis.
The protestors said that in August this year Zahid Iqbal Bhat son of Muhammad Iqbal Bhat resident of Padshahi Bagh went missing and his body later was fished out from the river Jehlum near Lal Ded Hospital. They said the body carried visible torture marks which indicated that Zahid was murdered.
Why police failed to nab the murderers after it was able to recover the watch and mobile phone from some suspects, questioned a relative adding the cell phone of Zahid was recovered from one suspect namely Ruhail Ahmed resident of Padshahi Bagh and next day the wrist watch and the clothes of the deceased were also recovered by the police. Moreover, police continued their investigation and arrested a number of suspects and interrogated them to find more clues, but till date police remains silent on the matter, he said.
The protestors said that it is astonishing that how one can abduct and later on murder an innocent lad like Zahid.
They alleged that some police officers were trying to sabotage the entire probe and were playing with the sentiments of the family members and residents of the area. cns
