SRINAGAR – Weather woes to continue during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir valley, including summer capital, Srinagar, where life remained affected due to water-lodged and damaged roads.
Entire Kashmir valley, including Srinagar, received moderate to heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours. Majority inner roads remained under snow though snow on main roads had been cleared in the city, where minimum temperature recorded a surge. However, day remained chilly due to icy cold winds.
A Met department spokesman said today that scattered very light snow or rain could occur in the Jammu and Kashmir during the next 24 hours.
However, he said, this will follow dry weather till December 17.
People in Ladakh Union Territory (UT) continued to shiver though the mercury has witnessed some improvement during the past 24 hours.
Life in summer capital, Srinagar, continued to suffer due to water-lodged and damaged roads, badly affecting vehicular and pedestrian movement.
Roof tops and open fields remained under white blanket. Though authorities have pressed into service machines to clear snow on main roads, majority inner roads remained snow bound. No snow clearance operation was undertaken in lanes and bylanes, affecting pedestrian and traffic movement, people alleged.
Srinagar recorded minus 0.5 degree minimum temperature which was half a notch below normal. The maximum temperature on Friday was 2 degree, 7.5 degree below normal.
The sky would be partly to generally cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around6 degree and minus 1 degree respectively during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, he said.
World famous ski resort of Gulmarg with minus 5 degree minimum temperature was coldest in the valley after heavy to very heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours. The maximum temperature there was 0.6 degree yesterday.
There was however, major improvement in the minimum temperature at famed health resort of Pahalgam. The minimum temperature witnessed about three degree surge and settled at minus 0.8 degree at Pahalgam, which serves as base camp for annual yatra to holy Amarnath cave shrine in south Kashmir Himalayas.
Kokernag, a tourist spot in south Kashmir recorded minus 1.4 degree minimum temperature after heavy snowfall during the past 24 hours.
Kupwara, witnessed a major surge in the minimum temperature and settled at 0.2 degree despite heavy to very heavy snowfall in the plains and upper heights. Roads leading to border towns of Keran, Karnah, Machil remained closed due to accumulation of snow.
Though there was some improvement in the mercury, but it was still below freezing points in Ladakh region.
At Leh the minimum temperature was minus 10.1 degree and Drass minus 11 degree, he said adding temperature at border town of Kargil was not available.
The sky would be partly cloudy and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 2 degree and minus 15 degree respectively at Leh during the next 24 hours.
