SRINAGAR: Government has decided not to allow Hurriyat (M) to organise any rally at Eidgah on May 21.
Restrictions under 144 have already been imposed in the city and due apprehension of law and order problem no rally would be allowed, officials said.
When a senior official in the administration was asked that Hurriyat (M) had already applied for the permission for May 21 rally, he declined to comment. Section 144 is already imposed, he said without elaborating.
Mirwaiz Condemns Police Action
Hurriyat Conference (M) meanwhile Saturday condemned the government for using force and terror to foil a seminar organized by the Awami Action Committee at Khanyar to pay tributes to Moulvi Mohammad Farooq on his 23rd anniversary and other martyrs of Kashmir.
A Hurriyat (M) spokesman said that the main venue of the seminar- Shaheedi Park- was placed under siege and all the arrangements done in connection with the seminar were disrupted.
AAC vehicles were ceased while as workers and activists of the party were terrorized and harassed. The posters and banners of the party at several places in the city were removed and government placed chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq under house arrest in order to foil the seminar, he added.
The Hurriyat (M) spokesman said the seminar was a planned part of Hafta-e-Shohada programme and the government action was unprovoked. He termed the government action to restrict the political, religious and social activities of the party with frustration and political retribution. He claimed that the large participation of the people in Hafta-e-Shohada programme flustered the authorities and they responded by putting restrictions on the emotions and aspirations of people.
The spokesman said the government had once again resorted to anti-democratic and anti-people policies to silence the genuine voices of Kashmir. He said that by putting Mirwaiz under house arrest, the government stopped Kashmiris were paying tributes to the martyrs of the movement.
The Hurriyat (M) spokesperson said it was highly regrettable and shameless act on part of the government. He said such dictatorial measures can never diminish the spirit of the pro-freedom leadership and instead it would strengthen it. Leadership would continue to represent the blood of the martyrs forward and would take their mission forward till it reaches its logical end, he said.
The spokesman made it clear that the Hafta Shohada programme would continue and appealed people to make May 21 Eidgah march a success.
However, a senior police officer rebutted the allegations of Hurriyat (M). They (Hurriyat) were planning to hold a rally in Khanyar chowk but they had not sought permission for that. There was apprehension of law and order problem in the area due to which Mirwaiz was asked to stay at home, he said.
The officer clarified that Mirwaiz wasnt under house arrest.
