MACCHIL: An Army officer was killed when militants opened fire on an army patrol during wee hours Saturday after it tried to intercept a group of infiltrating militants in Macchil sector along the Line of Control in Kupwara district.

“One Junior Commissioned Officer was killed and another jawan received injuries in the brief gunfight,” Udhampur based Army spokesperson said.

Giving details of the incident, Colonel Kalia said that troops of 56 Rashtriya Rifles observed the movement of militants around 2:30 in the morning. “Four to five militants were trying to sneak into our side. As the army challenged them, the militants opened fire killing JCO Arun Kumar and wounding a soldier Solanki Raju,” he said adding that militants managed to return to the other side of Kashmir.

He said that the search operation was going on in the area. “The militants left behind two assault rifles and other ammunition before crossing back into PaK controlled territory,” he said.

Additional Superintendent of Police, Kupwara, Tajinder Singh said that due to poor light only 4 to 5 militants were observed moving along the LOC. “Militants were 6 to 7 in number and we are sure that they fled back and failed to enter into Valley,” he said.
