JAMMU Police on Monday said it has arrested a PhD scholar along with five other militants for launching an abortive suicide car bomb attack on a CRPF convoy along the Jammu-Srinagar highway last month.
The attack was jointly hatched by outfits JeM and Hizb-ul-Mujahideen (HM) under the command of Pakistan-based (militant) Munna Bihari, Jammu Inspector General of Police M K Sinha told reporters here.
The arrested persons include a PhD scholar who is an active member of Jamiat-e-Talaba, the student wing of banned Jammat-e-Islami (JeI), he said.
His interrogation revealed that the group was engaged in radicalising youths in a big way for “jehad” (hoily war), said Sinha.
He said the National Investigation Agency is taking over the case on Tuesday for further investigation.
A CRPF vehicle was slightly damaged in the incident when a private car went up in flames near it after an explosion on the Highway near the Jawahar Tunnel in Ramban district.
The driver of the private vehicle managed to flee before the fire engulfed the vehicle and turned it into a mangled heap of iron.
The inspection of the vehicle and surrounding areas led to the recovery of an LPG cylinders, a jerrycan filled with petrol, gelatin stick, urea and sulphur material which is used for fabricating the Improvised Explosive Devices (IED), police had said.
The forensic experts and a team of NIA visited Banihal and inspected the scene to help in the investigation.
