Liaquat Had Applied For Return Under Rehab: JK Govt

SRINAGAR: Admitting that Liaquat Ali Shah, the Kupwara resident who was arrested by the Delhi police recently, had returned from Pakistan after applying properly under the official rehabilitation scheme, the government on Saturday said it had taken the issue up with authorities in the Indian capital.  

“Liaquat may have taken an alternative route for returning to India, which might not be permissible under the scheme, and that might have led to his detention by the Delhi Police,” the minister of state for home, Sajad Ahmad Kitchloo, said.

The minister, however, sought to deny MLA Er Abdul Rasheed’s assertion that at the time of detention Liaquat was accompanied by his family.

The minister claimed that he was alone and his family was at his native place in Kupwara.

It bears mention that Liaquat already had a wife back home when he went across the LoC where he is said to have married twice. One of the wives he married in PaK was travelling with him along with their children on his return to Kashmir.

Kitchloo said that the government had taken the matter up with the Delhi police and was in constant touch with superintendent of police in Kupwara to ascertain all details of the case.

“We are also in touch with the special cell of the Delhi Police,” he said. 

Omar Talks to Shinde

Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, this evening discussed with Home Minister, Sushil Kumar Shinde, the issue relating to Liyaqat Shah, who has been arrested by Delhi Police yesterday at Dehli.

The Chief Minister emphasized on getting the case thoroughly probed by National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a time bound manner to establish the facts.
