SRINAGAR: Curfew will not remain in force in the Valley on Saturday, the divisional administration said this evening, claiming that action would be taken against police and paramilitary personnel involved in excesses over the past days.
A police spokesman said that 109 policemen and 73 CRPF personnel had been injured in recent violence in North Kashmir, while stone-pelters had damaged 103 government and private vehicles.
The divisional commissioner for Kashmir, Asghar Samoon, put the overall figure of police and paramilitary personnel injured in Kashmir in recent clashes at 500.
We do not intend to impose curfew in the Valley on Saturday, but stiff measures can be taken wherever the situation takes an untoward turn, the divisional commissioner said.
He said that the administration would soon begin consultations with parents and civil society leaders to keep children away from stone-pelting and violence.
They can play an important role in restraining youth and children from violent activities, he said.
It is not wise to thrust stones into hands which should be holding books, he said.
In reply to a question, the divisional commissioner assured prompt action if any complaint is received of police and paramilitary forces committing excesses.
A magistrate and a police officer shall always accompany forces deployments, he said.
Meanwhile, the director general of the police, Ashok Prasad, reviewed the law and order situation in the valley with top police officers here today.
At a meeting in the police control room, the DGP stressed on officers to exercise maximum restraint while dealing with protests and demonstrations.
The DGP instructed his force not to use lethal weapons on stone-pelting crowds, and maintain discipline.
