SRINAGAR: The Kashmir High Court Bar Association (HCBA) today disclosed that parliament attack convict Muhammad Afzal Guru wanted fragmented Hurriyat Conference to unite.
The Bar said its members had visited Muhammd Afzal Guru in Tihar Jail and offered him legal support which he declined, said Bar President Zafar Qureshi during a news conference at Lower Court here today.
He also claimed that Guru told the visiting lawyers during one such meeting that he (Guru) didnt cry when court sentenced him to death but cried when Hurriyat Conference split.
Guru expressed apprehensions that the martyrdom of youth could go waste after division of the separatist leadership, the Bar Association members quoted Guru as saying during a press conference here today.
This step of Hurriyat has facilitated and made the job of enemies of Kashmiris easier and it made me cry, the Bar members quoting Guru said.
They termed this the political will of Guru.
I request them (Hurriyat) to unite to respect to the sacrifices presented by martyrs and prisoners. It is important that it should unite to take the struggle to its logical end. Death sentence has not affected my confidence but the division in the Hurriyat has discouraged me, Bar members said while quoting Guru.
Bar President Advocate Zafar Qureshi, former Presidents Advocate Main Qayum and Nazir Ahmad Ronga addressed the press conference.
In an effort to disprove the allegations levelled by National Conference against it, the Bar Association Tuesday highlighted the steps and initiatives taken by it to save the life of Parliament attack convict. We followed every possible legal procedure to save the life of Guru. We also offered him free legal services to plead his case during our visit to Tihar Jail but he refused saying he had a counsel in the Supreme Court, said Bar Association members.
Gurus Family never approached the Bar for legal assistance but we visited Guru several times and offered our services to him, said Bar President Zafar Qureshi. He said that under law, the free will and consent of the accused is necessary for his counsel to plead his case in the court of law.
Members of the Bar later offered funeral prayers in absentia for Muhammad Afzal Guru on the occasion (KNS)
