SRINAGAR: Expressing anguish over the official apathy with regard to supply of electricity in the state, Legislators of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have called upon the state government to lift ban on purchase of electric transformers out of the legislators Constituency Development Fund (CDF).
Despite huge growth in population, the state government is not installing new transformers to mitigate to growing load on existing transformers, with the result huge numbers of transformers have developed snags. This has resulted in extreme hardships for people across the state, said PDP legislators Muhammad Rafi Mir, Syed Basharat Bukhari and Peerzada Mansoor Hussain in a joint statement.
They called upon the authorities to install new transformers and replace existing ones which have developed defects due to growing load.
The legislators expressed surprise over the governments move to ban procurement of the transformers out of the MLAs CDF. Procuring new transformers and Replacing or repairing of old transformers is a need to the time when people in the state are reeling under darkness and harsh winter. Use of CDF for this purpose could actually have ensured its best use, the legislators said.
They said although they had taken up the matter in the state assembly, but the Chief Minister had promised that new transformers would be installed wherever necessary. However, today hundred of transformers are defunct and piling up in workshops. People are running from door to door to get new transformers or get the old ones repaired but there is no one to redress their grievances, they added.
While asking the government to review its decision, the legislators said the MLAs of the ruling parities were also of the same view and wanted revocation of the government directive.
