SRINAGAR: Three more persons have been arrested for the murder of a newly-wed Lolab bride in February last year in what the Kupwara police says is a case of honour killing.
The victims father and the person to whom she had been married against her will are already behind bars along with three others, facing murder charges for killing the young woman by poisoning.
The fresh arrests include a CRPF deserter Riyaz Ahmad and a Home Guards volunteer, Fayyaz Ahmad Shah, both of whom had been declared fugitives from law when they went absconding last year.
As already reported by Kashmir Observer on December 13, the police had termed the case as an honour killing, saying that the girls family had killed her because of her wish to marry a youth not of the same high caste.
According to the police, the victim had been killed by poisoning just two days after her forced marriage, the crime involving her own family and the in-laws she never accepted.
The girls family of high-caste Peers had married her off to a local youth of the same clan with the help of witnesses who testified falsely at the Nikah ceremony that she had given her consent, the police said.
One Waqar Ahmad Khan, whom the girl had wanted to marry, spent nine months in prison on murder charges, but was released in December when forensic reports showed that the victim had died of poisoning and not at his hands by hanging as her family and in-laws claimed.
