SRINAGAR: Life remained disrupted in the Kashmir Valley on Tuesday due to a strike against forces firing on civilians that left at least eight persons injured in the South Kashir town of Pulwama last week.
Called by both factions of the Hurriyat Conference, the shutdown closed main commercial centres and kept public transport off the roads.
Work in government offices suffered due to low attendance, and educational institutions still functioning in winter remained closed.
In Srinagar, shops in the city centre of Lal Chowk and adjoining areas remained totally closed, though private vehicles plied as usual.
Police and paramilitary men had been deployed, particularly in sensitive areas, but there were no reports of any untoward incident.
Reports said that protests broke out at a few places in Pulwama town over the arrest tow local youth last night for being involved in stone-pelting.
Shops and other commercial establishments remained closed in other major towns as well, reports said.
