SRINAGAR: A leopard entered weather observatory room at ski resort of Gulmarg, creating panic among the weathermen who could not record the minimum temperature this morning.
“We could not record the minimum temperature at Gulmarg as our official could not enter the room where the temperature could be recorded,” a Met official said here.
He said when the official routinely went into the room to record the temperature, he was shocked to see a leopard there. He immediately rushed out from the building and informed the police and wildlife officials so that the leopard could be captured.
A leopard was captured and handed over to wildlife department after the animal had entered Nishat area on the bank of Dal Lake on December 20.
Due to snowfall on upper reaches, the wild animals have started infiltrating into nearby villages in the Kashmir valley where the man animal has so far claimed more than 40 lives and hundreds of injured during the past few years.
More than a dozen animals were also killed in retaliation by the agitated villagers and wildlife department, police and security forces during the same period. The wildlife department has appealed to people living in villages near forests to take extra precautions to avoid attacks by animals. AGENCIES
