No Curfew In Old City Areas Today: Police

SRINAGAR: The police on Tuesday evening announced to lift curfew from the two police precincts still under stringent curbs since a clampdown on a major portion of the Old City last week following group clashes.

The decision was announced after a two-hour relaxation in the Nauhatta and Zadibal precincts at four in the afternoon passed off peacefully.

The superintendent of the police for Hazratbal, Abdul Qayoom, said that curfew was lifted on assurances from prominent residents.

Authorities held meetings with prominent residents of the areas concerned and it was decided that they would make every effort to defuse tensions, the police officer said.

The elders assured that elements involved in creating tensions and sectarian discord would be identified, he said.

It was then decided that there would be no curfew in the areas on Wednesday, he said.

The district magistrate for Srinagar, Baseer Ahmad Khan, said that curfew was relaxed in the Nauhatta and Zadibal areas for two hours this afternoon, and the break was then extended.

He said that a decision on lifting or re-imposing curfew would be taken on assessing the situation.

Curfew had been enforced on nine police precincts in Old Srinagar on Wednesday evening after group clashes broke out in the Hawal-Zadibal area.

The quarter witnessed fresh tension and violence on Saturday morning, forcing authorities bring it again under curbs which it had lifted from all hitherto curfew-bound areas a few hours earlier.
