Srinagar: Senior separatist leader Nazir Ahmad Wani has died in United States. He breathed his last after brief illness on Friday March 17. Late Nazir Ahmad Wani was close associate of Muhammad Maqbool Bhat.
Nazir Ahmad Wani was founder of Armed Struggle in Kashmir under the banner of Al-Fatah in 1968. Later after his release from Jail, he founded Political Party Peoples League and was elected its Chairman.
Fazal Haque Qureshi, Shabir Ahmad Shah and several other leaders were his collegues in the league.
As per a statement from Peoples League, Nazir Ahmad Wani opposed Indra Abdullah Accord in 1975 calling it sell out. Late Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah as per the statement offered him cabinet berth which he declined. Later he crossed over LOC and joined his father in Muzaffarabad.
It is worth mentioning that Nazir Ahmad Wanis father, late Ghulam Rasool was sent into exile by then Prime Minister Bakshi Ghulam Mohammad in 1957. At that time Nazir Ahmad was school going child. Later he completed B.Sc Agriculture and was appointed gazette officer in the department but due to his attachment with the Freedom Struggle, he had to quit his job only after few months. In fact freedom of Kashmir has been passion for the whole family. Nazir Ahmads younger brother Alhaj Farooq Ahmad Wani is currently General Secretary of Peoples League.
A condolence meeting on the sad demise of Nazir Ahmad Wani will be held at the residence of his younger brother Riyaz Ahmad at Momin abad Hyderpora on Sunday 19 March 2017 at 9 am.
