Mumbai: Muimbai attack convict Ajmal Kasab was executed at 7.30 am on Wednesday after President Pranab Mukherjee rejected his mercy plea.
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde confirmed the news on Wednesday.
The mercy petition filed by the Pakistani origin militant Ajmal Kasab, who was awarded death sentence for his role in the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack was rejected by the President.
Reports said he was secretly hanged at Pune’s Yerawada Jail after his mercy plea was rejected.
The home ministry on October 23 had rejected Kasab’s mercy petition that had been addressed to the President.
The Mumbai trial court had on May 6, 2010 awarded death sentence to Kasab which was upheld by the Bombay High Court on February 21, 2011. The apex court rejected his appeal on August 29.
Kasab was one of the 10 Pakistani terrorists who sailed from their country and illegally sneaked into Mumbai on the night of November 26, 2008 for a terror siege of the city that ended on November 29 afternoon. The mayhem that Kasab and his nine accomplices unleashed on the city claimed 166 innocent lives.
