Srinagar: Milk companies in Kashmir Valley have announced arbitrary hike in milk prices by Re 2 each for both half litre and one litre packs earlier this week, a move that Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Department (CAPD) Department is unaware of.
The milk companies including Snowcap, Zum Zum, Dairy Light, Kashmir Dairy, Haleeb which sell lakhs of litres of milk per day in Valley have increased the prices without taking the CAPD Department on board. “We don’t know anything about it. If it has happened, action will be initiated,” said a CAPD official to news agency CNS.
As per the new rates, toned milk will be available at Rs 36 per litre. Earlier consumers procured a litre for Rs 34 only.
“With the hike in price, the milk vendors have also decided to raise the price of the vended milk. It is quite disturbing that government is in slumber and doesn’t take the things seriously,” said a consumer.
Meanwhile, Centre for Peace and Protection of Human Rights through its Chairman M.M.Shuja has filed a petition against the arbitrary price hike by these companies in State Human Rights Commission. The Commission has listed the case for the hearing on December 7 this month. (CNS)
