SRINAGAR (ONS) – Nursing students of a premier college in Kashmir held protests once again on Tuesday here, decrying authorities refusal to recognise their qualifications, and said that the state and the central governments were jeopardising the future of Kashmiri youth.
Trainees and graduates of the Bibi Haleema Nursing College alleged that Kashmir was being discriminated vis-a-vis Jammu where, they said, that as many as five similar colleges had already been granted recognition.
Several batches have already graduated from our college, the students said. And many are under training, but the future of all has been put at peril.
Nearly 200 students have secured their B.Sc degrees in nursing, but they are being denied admissions in higher courses on the pretext that the college is not affiliated to the Indian Nursing Council, they said.
The protestors accused the state government and the college administration of deceiving them.
They said that they had joined the college on the state governments claims that it was affiliated to the Indian Nursing Council and the Punjab Nursing Registration Council.
But after graduation, we were stunned when universities outside rejected our applications for higher studies, claiming that our college was not affiliated to the Indian Nursing Council and the Punjab Nursing Registration Council, the protestors said.
The college had given us documentary proof that it was registered with the Punjab Council, they said.
On the other hand, the Indian Nursing Council said that the Act bringing all nursing colleges under it did not apply to Jammu and Kashmir, they said.
How then did the Council permit floating nursing courses in the state? they asked.
The state and the central governments resort to such steps to jeopardize the future of Kashmiri youth, they said.
