PAHALGAM: Lambasting the Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) and Pahalgam Municipal Committee for piling up garbage across the scenic resort, the residents of Ganeshbal Pahalgam warned that they will not let their areas turn into dumping sites.
From the last 10 years, the PDA and Municipal Committee, Pahalgam have been dumping garbage of all manners in the Sarbal area of Pahalgam which is very close to Ganeshbal village.
The piling up of garbage poses a grave health risk for not only the local population but for their livestock as well. Not only does this garbage piling pose a danger to our health, it is also injurious for our livestock, said a villager, Mohammad Ramzan. Besides it ruins the scenic beauty that Pahalgam is known for.
“There should be a separate dumping site away from the village to tackle the garbage without disturbing the surroundings, he said. The authorities should put in place a mechanism to do away with the waste.
The Municipal committee has been dumping its wastes in the Sarbal area close to the Ganeshbal village. A mosque and a Darl-ul-Aloom have been constructed here and the heaps of waste directly overflow into their premises.
CEO Pahalgam told Kashmir observer that a special arrangement has been put in place wherein some expensive spray is used that decomposes the waste more quickly without causing any harm to anything.
The residents however maintained that they would launch a massive protest against the concerned authorities if a separate site was not be identified for dumping of these wastes.
