Srinagar: Following intense clashes and protests and days of shutdown, police have launched a massive crackdown against youths in Old City parts here and have detained more than 20 youths so far.
Police sources said that the crackdown has been started to contain the surging protests and stone-throwing clashes across the Old City.
Sources said the most of the raids were conducted during nocturnal hours since last two days. The raids were conducted in Nowhatta, Rajouri Kadal, Gojwara, Nawa Kadal and adjoining areas, the sources said.
“We have identified the youths involved in stone-pelting. Those who are repeatedly indulging in stone pelting would be booked while others would be released after counseling,” the sources said.
Police have decided to intensify crackdown in coming days and would examine CCTV footage at various places to identify the youth involved in stone-pelting.
Meanwhile, the family members of the detained youths alleged that their sons have been subjected to excessive beating by police in custody. “Police have thrashed them ruthlessly in custody,” they said. The sources in Old City said that over 30 youths have been rounded up.
Pertinently, the City parts are on boil since last week following the killing of a youth in HMT at the hands of government forces.
