SRINGAR: Traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, which was resumed this morning after remaining suspended for security reasons from October 18 afternoon, was again stopped.
Official sources said people, mostly youths, again blocked the highway in south Kashmir district of Anantnag at several places. However, when security forces tried to chase away the demonstrators, they pelted stones.
Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse the pro-freedom slogan shouting demonstrators. Later for security reasons, authorities again suspended traffic due to violence.
Hundreds of vehicles got stranded at several places on the highway. Traffic was suspended for security reasons on October 18 after clashes erupted at several places on the highway in south Kashmir following death of Zahid Bhat, a trucker who received burn injuries during a petrol bomb attack on a truck at Udhampur on October 9 by some anti-beef consumption protestors.
