Srinagar: Groups of youth on Friday staged protests and clashed with government forces in Old City area of Srinagar.
A mob assembled near Jamia Masjid in Nowhatta and staged anti-India protests. The protesters waved the flags of ISIS, Pakistan as well as Lashkar-e-Taiba. Eyewitnesses said that the protesters, were also holding pictures of ISIS chief Abu Bakar Baghdhadi.
Reports said that the youths pelted stones on government forces deployed in the area who in return fired teargas and pepper gas shells to disperse the protesters. The clashes in the area continued for nearly 30 minutes.
The youths later emerged from lanes and by-lanes at Saraf Kadal, Kadi Kadal and Rajouri Kadal along Nallahmar Road and pelted stones on police and CRPF. Due to stand-off between youth and police, the commercial activities in the area came to halt. However, the situation returned to normal later.
Reports said that many youths were detained by police during stone-pelting. However, there was no word from police over the detentions.
