SRINAGAR: In an unprecedented move a group of stone pelterswere thrashed and later chased by shopkeepers of Rajouri Kadal area on Friday.
Eyewitnesses said soon after Friday prayers ended in Jamia Masjid, groups of youth emerged in the areas surrounding the historic mosque and began throwing rocks at police and passing vehicles triggering panic.
Some of the masked youth were carrying black flags of DAESH or Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS, they said.
Eyewitnesses said that when the mob was chased by police towards Rajouri Kadal they met a different type of resistance there.
Scores of shopkeepers at Rajouri Kadal armed with lathis caught hold of many masked youth and gave them a severe beating. The traders carrying sticks and stones ran after the stone-pelters and thrashed them mercilessly, said an eyewitness.
We dont know where from these youth emerge after every Friday Nimaz. They are not residents of these areas and these people always resort to stone-pelting without any reason. We have been incurring losses due to these elements, said a shopkeeper adding that these stone-pelters are Indian agents who wave Pa-kistani and IS flags to defame Kashmiri movement. -With inputs from CNS
