Anantnag:- Despite the tall claims of the government that various steps have been taken to streamline traffic in Anantnag , the south Kashmir city witnesses massive traffic snarls every day leaving thousands of people stuck for hours. However Traffic policemen, blame the wrong parking on main roads and rising number of vehicles for frequent jams.
The narrow roads in Anantnag town are causing tremendous inconvenience to the people besides causing frequent traffic congestion. The roads network in the town is poor. Though the traffic has increased manifold but the roads remain same as they were a decade back. The unabated encroachments on the road sides and even the footpaths have made the things worse.
The people, mostly students and govt employers, for the last five days are facing daily trouble mainly from Moominabad to Janglat Mandi.
A resident Zahoor Ahmed says that the ill planning of the government is leading to the menace of overcrowding and congestion in the town as illegal constructions continue unabated with the tacit support of the municipal council authorities of Anantnag.
He also said that it is even difficult for the pedestrians to walk on the narrow pavements of the town which are mostly occupied by the shop owners and vendors.
Another Resident of Anantnag told to Kashmir Observer that the government should go for widening of some of the key roads of the town like Mattan Chowk Dangerpora Road, Cheeni Chowk, Janglat Mandi road , Doonipwa road , Reeshi Bazar road , Iqbal Market road, Kadipora-Sarnal road and Malakhnag-Sherpora road to overcome the problem of frequent traffic snarls.
The government and district administration should launch a drive against the encroachers and authorities should also take on the illegal sumo stands and shift them at a suitable place.
He suggested that all the Sumo stands of the town can be relocated to the available land behind Wazir Bagh.
