Political turmoil, conflict has negatively impacted women
Srinagar, Mar 7 (KNS): On the occasion of International Womens Day, while expressing concern over the ever increasing crime against women, Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq Saturday said that the irresponsible attitude adopted by government and society as a whole towards protection and respect of Womens Rights has led to the rise in inhuman and ghastly crimes against the women at every level.
Expressing deep anguish, Mirwaiz exclaimed that in spite of the development in technology, education, and other fields, what is disheartening to see is the rapid rise in crime against women and denying them basic human rights, when a woman is the glue that holds and moulds the society.
Pointing towards outrageous crimes being committed against women, he said, Domestic abuse, physical violence, female infanticide, refusal of basic human rights, is one of the important causes responsible for the degradation and break down of the moral fabric of our society.
On the occasion, Mirwaiz said that the political turmoil and conflict situation has caused great unrest in the state in the last more than two decades which has negatively impacted the women in society. Kashmiri women have been subject to physical abuse, rape, torture and other crimes committed by the government forces including Army which is responsible for the ever increasing mental disorders and depression amongst them, he said.
Quoting a recent study, Mirwaiz said that amongst the patients who come for treatment at the only mental hospital in Kashmir, majority of them are womenDduring the ongoing turmoil the mothers, sisters and wives of the persons who disappeared in custody and were supposedly buried in mass graves have suffered the worst. They keep waiting for their loved ones to come back and this perpetual grief has afflicted them physically as well as mentally, the Hurriyat (M) chairman said.
Mentioning the recent acid attack on a law student in Srinagar, Mirwaiz said, This horrendous inhuman act poses a serious challenge to the entire society about the respect of our women folk and the effort of building a society on better moral values.
Pointing towards the much talked about Womens Rights wave in the world, he said, Such activities seem to be happening only in name. What we all get to see is failure on the part of the governments and the relevant institutions to take concrete measures, like passing of laws and providing an effective system of justice to protect women and ensure that their rights are not violated.
He lamented that in certain cases influential people and governments have been seen protecting the culprits rather than punishing them.
