Srinagar: Police and army apprehended a top Pakistani militant commander of Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit from the residential house of a village headman in Sangarhama area of north Kashmirs Baramulla district.
Official sources said that police also arrested the Sarpanch (Village-head) Farooq Ahmad Bhat son of Ghulam Mohammad Bhat of Choru village.
Official sources said that Special Operation Group (SOG) Sopore and armys 52 Rashtriya Rifles (RR) following the specific intelligence input raided Bhats house at Choru on Thursday evening and arrested him as well as Pakistani militant Abu Zubair alias Muaviya.
Police have also recovered one AK-47 rifle, five magazines, three hand grenades and a pouch, they said.
As per reports, the arrested militant has been identified as a Pakistani National and is undergoing questioning by the Police.
A police official while confirming the incident told GNS that Bhat has been also arrested and the investigations in this regard have been launched.
The officer claimed the arrest of Muavia as a major breakthrough and expected to provide useful information to police in cracking the militant network in the region.
Meanwhile, the Inspector General of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) said that it is cause of concern when a Sarpanch or any government official provides shelter to a militant. He was speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in Humhama here in Srinagar. (GNS)
