Kayaking race held from Zero Bridge to Downtown in Jhelum
SRINAGAR- In a colourful water sports event held on the banks of river Jhelum in Srinagar, Chief Secretary Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta unveiled the calendar of sports activities in Kashmir.
The race was flagged off by Chief Secretary, J&K in which around 100 participants including boys and girls participated. More than 800 athletes from various other sports disciplines also attended the function besides thousands who watched the race from the banks of river Jehlum along the entire course of the race.
Meanwhile in yet another function held in the historic MA Stadium Jammu, Principal Secretary to government, Youth Services and Sports department Alok Kumar unveiled the sports activities calendar in presence of mammoth gathering of around 3000 players and coaches. A cricket match for blind cricketers was also played during the event.
In Kashmir division, Dr. Arun Kumar Mehta presided over the function as the chief guest, while as P.K Pole, Divisional Commissioner Kashmir was the guest of honour and District Commissioner Srinagar, Ajaz Asad along with Secretary Sports Council, Nuzhat Gul and other officers and officials from various other government departments including Department of Information, Health, SDRF, NDRF, Tourism, JKTDC, J&K Police, Srinagar Municipal Corporation etc. were also present on the occasion.
While declaring the tournament open, Alok Kumar, stressed upon all the stakeholders especially coaches to play an important role in taping the talent in the rural areas and that they should customize the coaching programmes to accommodate talent from such areas.
Dr. Mehta while terming it as a historic day in the sports of J&K as the event of Kayaking was being organised for the first time in the gushing waters of river Jhelum. He said, “scope of such activities will be expanded to still waters of Manasbal, Wular, Nigeen Lake and all other major water bodies of the union territory”.
Dr Arun Kumar Mehta while addressing the participants said that after successfully involving more than 17 lakh youth in different sports activities last year, the government is aiming to double the figure this year.
Meanwhile, in Jammu Alok Kumar stressed providing every possible help to athletes from weaker economic backgrounds so that all talent is brought to the fore and reaches its deserved platform.
He also emphasized that government will engage maximum youth in sports and games and provide them a healthy environment to grow.
Earlier in the day, Nuzhat Gul Secretary Sports Council presented welcome address and vote of thanks in Kashmir. She thanked all the dignitaries and distinguished guests for sparing their precious time to encourage all involved in sports especially sports persons.
The welcome address in Jammu was presented by Dr. Zaffar Iqbal Chief Accounts Officer, Sports Council, who while welcoming the chief guest and other participants also gave gist of activities organized at the Panchayat level in both the regions of J&K. Moreover, the proceedings of the function were conducted by Ashok Singh Divisional Sports Officer, Jammu who also presented the vote of thanks in the end. Administrative officer, J&K Sports Council Sheikh Riyaz also interacted with the players and coaches.

While as in Jammu, many officials from Sports Council including SP Singh, Manager MA Stadium. Satish Gupta, Manager Indoor Sports Complex, MA Stadium were also present on the occasion.
