The encounter in Kulgam broke out hours after militants and government forced traded gunfire in Verinag area in the neighboring Anantnag district in which two soldiers and a policeman was injured.
The encounter raged on in Nowgam village of Dooru on Wednesday evening when a joint team of police, army’s 19 RR and the personnel of CRPF 164 battalion laid a siege around the village and launched a cordon and search operation to hunt down the hiding militants, a police official said.
The holed-up militants, he said, opened fire upon the search team when the area was being cordoned off.
“The joint team returned the fire, setting off an encounter,” the official said.
According to reports, two soldiers and a policeman were injured in the initial exchange of gunfire with the holed-up militants. The injured identified as Rohit Yadav and Ishant of army’s counter-insurgency unit 19 RR and policemen Depak Kumar were shifted to nearby hospital for treatment.
