Srinagar: Police on Thursday claimed to have arrested a truck driver, hours after he knocked to death an assistant sub inspector (ASI) of traffic police at Bonigam crossing in Qazigund area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
According to a police spokesperson, ASI Mohammad Shafi Bhat of Shangus, Anantnag was killed on the spot after an unknown truck hit him around 3:00 am Thursday at Bonigam crossing Qazigund. The truck driver, he said, fled away from the spot.
“Acting promptly, Police Station Qazigund constituted special teams to intercept the vehicle along with the accused driver. The team led by SHO Qazigund after strenuous efforts intercepted the truck (JK22B-4365) along with the accused driver from Choimulla area of Anantnag,” the police spokesperson said.
He identified the accused as Javid Ahmad Bhat of Sangrama, Sopore.
“He has been arrested and shifted to the police station where he remains in custody. Vehicle involved in the crime has also been seized,” the police spokesperson said.
“A case FIR No. 51/2021 under relevant sections of law stands registered at PS Qazigund regarding the incident and further investigation of the case is in progress,” he added.
