Srinagar, May 21 : The Awami Mutahida Mahaz (Peoples United Front) held a post election meeting on Wednesday which was attended by Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami, Hakeem Mohammad Yaseen, Abdul Rashid Kabuli and Abdul Rehman Tukroo.
According to a statement , the meeting deliberated on various issues especially the political situation emerging post Lok Sabha elections in the state. Terming the just concluded Lok Sabha election results in the state as a wakeup call for all political parties of Jammu and Kashmir, the AMM stressed on need to have a broader mass movement to-get-rid of rampant corruption, injustice with educated unemployed youth, misgovernance and administrative inertia in the state.
The meeting opined that need of the hour is to shun conventional political approach about the issues confronting people on the ground. The misgovernance, rampant corruption, inflation and sky rocketing prices, rising unemployment has created a choking atmosphere for people which has compelled them to look for alternatives.
The meeting observed that in order to restore a dignified life, the people need to form a broader mass movement that can empower them and bring a substantial relief thereby reducing their sufferings.
The large-scale corruption at every level is a result of a nexus between some politicians, bureaucrats and criminals, believes the AMM leaders while emphasizing on a need for a meaningful and result oriented struggle against this menace. The meeting observed that for making the administration transparent and accountable it is urgently required to initiate a sustainable public mobilization which can deliver meaningful results.
Besides stressing on the unity of all the regions of Jammu and Kashmir the AMM leaders urged for restoration of economic and cultural unity among the people across the LoC in order to have a long lasting political stability in Jammu and Kashmir.
The meeting observed that the administrative inertia vis-à-vis developmental schemes in Kashmir is appalling. The administration seems in deep slumber which has also resulted into black marketing, ration pilferage and loot in the markets. The AMM leaders expressed serious concern over sufferings of people for want of ration, other essential commodities and the administration seems not in a mood to act. The meeting observed that the officers have confined themselves to the four walls of their offices. There is no visible outcome of their meetings which have now become a ritual.
The meeting reiterated that every family, irrespective of whether it is living below or above the poverty line, should be given 35 kg of food grain every month at the rate of Rs.2 per kg and the huge food grain stores where the grains are wasting should be released for this purpose. The AMM demanded immediate increase in the allocation of ration to meet the needs of the bifurcated families after 2001 and streamlining the rationing system with the introduction of unified ration cards.
Taking stock of the dismal electricity scenario in Kashmir, the AMM observed that damaged transformers besides increasing power tariff is back breaking for the people. The meeting felt it ironic that people in many parts of the Valley are served with long bills even after their damaged transformers are lying unrepaired at workshops for weeks together. AMM leaders stated that even after a huge increase in power tariff, the department does not bother to repair the transformers that have developed technical snags and are lying at service stations across the state. The step-down transformers, installed in the rural areas of the district develop technical snags and the consumers are left helpless in darkness for weeks together.
