Srinagar – Eyeing a world record, a PHE executive engineer is adamant at having a 242-year-old employee on his departments rolls.
In his zeal to make a global mark, the X-En has taken huge risks, including flouting orders from the chief engineer and two successive superintending engineers to straighten the matter out, besides refusing to budge even when the matter has reportedly gone to the ministers level.
Uncharacteristic for a woman, the employee in question is not overly concerned at having been consigned to antiquity at an early age, but is perturbed because it has held up her highly-deserved promotion.
For, Firdaus Akhtar is a highly commended official, with a number of citations from superiors for her outstanding performance.
Presently working in the revenue section of the PHE Master Plan in Soura, Firdaus has received accolades from the department for achieving fee-collection targets.
Her age predicament is due to an error in the service book, which shows her year of birth as 1770 instead of 1970 as borne out by her matriculation certificate and School Board records.
It is surmised that the error is due to deliberate tampering to create problems in her career.
Though top PHE officers have been understanding and repeatedly asked the executive engineer to make the necessary corrections, in the service book, Firdaus says the latter has shown inexplicable disinclination to do so.
She alleges that the engineer was rude to her when she raised the matter with him in his office recently. KNS
