SRINAGAR– Downtown Heores FC are all set to face Indian football giants Mohun Bagan in the 2024 Durand Cup opener, but before that, the Srinagar-based football club has secured a morale boosting tournament win.
In the final of the JKFA Spring Legacy Football Tournament on Friday, the Heroes faced off against rising football club, Syed Tajjudin FC Natipora, at Polo Ground. In a tightly contested matchup, Downtown edged past the STFC in a 1-0 win.
The Natipora club had defeated JK Bank FC in the semifinals and posed an underdog threat to Downtown’s trophy aspirations. However, the Heroes, who beat Iqbal Sports FC in the semis, held on to lift the first edition Spring Legacy trophy. The tournament was organised by J&K Football Association in collaboration with J&K Sports Council.
Earlier, Downtown Heroes won the South Kashmir Gold Cup by defeating STFC Natipora 1-0 in the final.
The Heroes will now set their sights on the daunting task of facing Mohun Bagan Super Gant in the inaugural match of the Durand Cup on July 27 in Kolkata.
The 133rd edition of Asia’s oldest and world’s fifth oldest tournament will be played in four cities — Kolkata, Kokrajhar in Assam, Shillong in Meghalaya and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand.
Downtown Heroes are placed in Group A, alongside Mohun Bagan, East Bengal FC and Indian Air Force FT.
