SRINAGAR- The J&K senior men’s cricket team on Wednesday registered its first win of the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023-24 after defeating Delhi by 75 runs at the ADSA Railway Ground in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
Shubham Khajuria 109 (112) and Rasikh Salam (4/23) led J&K in batting and bowling departments after the team performed poorly and lost the first two games of the competition by huge margins. Karnataka won the opener by 222 runs, while Chandigarh beat Jammu & Kashmir by 8 wickets. The senior team managed 180 and 138 in the two matches.
Knowing J&K’s struggling batting display in the tourney, Delhi decided to bowl first after winning the toss. However, the Jammu & Kashmir’s top order performed well with skipper Shubham Khajuria leading the way. Shubham smacked 6 sixes and 6 fours in his blistering ton. He was aptly assisted by his opening partner Abhinav Puri 46 (75), while Aquib Nabi 44* (24) played a crucial inning in the final overs to help J&K reach a competitive total of 299-7 in 50 overs. Mayank Yadav picked up three wickets for Delhi.
In reply, the Delhi top order crumbled as J&K’s pace sensation Rasikh Salam removed the opening batter in his third delivery of the first over. Rasikh then had the other half of the starting pair LBW in his second over to set the tone for the rest of the game.
Delhi captain Yash Dull 49 (56) and Ayush Badoni 31 (50) tried to stabilize the innings, but were dismissed in back-to-back overs by Abid Mushtaq (3-28). Lalit Yadav 67 (62) led the charge for Delhi, but Rasikh ensured J&K cross the finish line as Delhi were bundled out for 224-10 in 45.3 overs.
J&K next play Mizoram on Friday, December 1.
