Srinagar- Police on Friday arrested five people for allegedly carrying out robberies by posing as militants in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
Police received multiple complaints from the villagers of Katrasoo, Matibugh and Tarigam that a group of masked men impersonating as militants entered their houses, threatened them with weapons and extorted money and other valuable items, a police spokesperson said Friday.
Keeping in view the sensitivity of the matter, he said, a case (FIR No. 92/2022) under relevant sections of law was registered at Police Station Yaripora and investigation was initiated.
During the course of investigation, the spokesperson said, a special team led by SHO Police Station Yaripora was constituted to investigate the matter.
“Accordingly, searches/raids were conducted at various locations to unearth the involved module. Generating specific information regarding the involved module, the accused persons were identified and subsequently arrested at a special checkpoint established at Yaripora Kulgam,” he said.
The police identified the accused as Nazir Mushtaq, Karman Ahmad, Khalid Hussain, Rizwan Ah Deedad and Abrar Ahmad Teedwa.
During the search, the spokesperson said, two toy guns, 1 toy pistol, 2 cutters, 55 mobile phones and equal number of masks were recovered from their possession.
“Besides, the vehicle used in commission of crime has also been seized. Further investigation into the matter is in progress,” he said.
