Srinagar- Wildlife Warden, Wetlands Division Kashmir has issued a notice on 22nd July, 2022 to the District Mineral Officer Geology & Mining Department District Srinagar/ Budgam, urging them to regulate the illegal mining in Doodh Ganga Nallah.
“It is to bring your kind notice that from reliable sources, this office came to know that approximately 10 meter deep illegal mining is being done with the help of JCB’s, truckers and tippers without following environmental guidelines in vogue” the notice states, a copy of which lies with Kashmir Observer.
The notice further states that excessive extraction of mining will badly affect not only the flow and quality but also other characteristics of the Hokersar Wetlands Conservation Reserve.
Wildlife warden has further urged the Geology & Mining Department that mining activities be regulated as per the directions of National Green Tribunal as per the guidelines of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Forest Conservation Act, Environment Protection Act & Wetland Conservation Rules.
It also urged them to take early action.
It is pertinent to mention, that Doodh Ganga Nallah is the main feeding Channel to Hokersar Wetlands Conservation Reserve” which is a RAMSAR site.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, District Mineral Officer , Geology & Mining Department Ghulam Din said that illegal mining is not being done anywhere.
“Those involved in mining have proper permissions and NOC’s” he said
