Srinagar: Two unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, while a CRPF trooper was injured in a militant ambush in Pulwama district, officials said Friday.
Acting on specific inputs about the presence of militants, a joint team of special operations group (SOG) of police and army laid a cordon around Dairoo village of Keegam in Shopian this morning, a police official said. When the joint team started advances, the militants hiding in a residential house opened fire at them in a bid to escape from their dragnet.
“The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed,” the official said.
The bodies of the militants were recovered from the debris of the house that was blasted by the state forces.
The identity of the slain and their group affiliation are being ascertained, officials said.
Meanwhile, a CRPF trooper was injured this evening when militants opened fire upon a mobile checkpoint established by security forces at the Newa area in Pulwama.
The injured trooper identified as Vishnu Kumar from Rajasthan was removed to hospital for treatment.
Soon after the attack, government forces cordoned off the area and started searches to nab the militants.
