Srinagar: Two unidentified militants were killed in a gunfight with government forces in south Kashmir’s Shopian district, while a CRPF trooper was injured in a militant ambush in Pulwama district, officials said Friday.
Acting on specific inputs about the presence of militants, a joint team of special operations group (SOG) of police and army laid a cordon around Dairoo village of Keegam in Shopian this morning, a police official said. When the joint team started advances, the militants hiding in a residential house opened fire at them in a bid to escape from their dragnet.
“The fire was retaliated leading to an encounter. In the exchange of fire, two militants were killed,” the official said.
The bodies of the militants were recovered from the debris of the house that was blasted by the state forces.
The identity of the slain and their group affiliation are being ascertained, officials said.
Meanwhile, a CRPF trooper was injured this evening when militants opened fire upon a mobile checkpoint established by security forces at the Newa area in Pulwama.
The injured trooper identified as Vishnu Kumar from Rajasthan was removed to hospital for treatment.
Soon after the attack, government forces cordoned off the area and started searches to nab the militants.

Jammu and Kashmir police meanwhile claimed to have killed two alleged militants responsible for murder of a policeman and injuries to another in Kishtwar area of Doda district.
On Monday, special police officers (SPOs) Pashid Iqbal and Vishal Singh were patrolling Tander, Dachan area of Kishtwar when they were attacked with axe by two alleged Hizb militants Basharat Hussain and Ashiq Hussain. While Pashid died in the attack, Singh suffered serious injuries and was removed to hospital.
After the attack, government forces launched massive combing operation to nab the attackers, who had fled to the upper reaches. DIG Doda and senior officers of police and army supervised the operation, a police spokesman said in a statement issued today.
“After meticulous search and painstaking efforts for three continuous days, the search party zeroed in the duo in a nallah,” he said.
He said the hiding militants opened fire after observing the movement of forces near the nallah.
“In the retaliatory action, both the militants were eliminated. One AK-74 and one INSAS rifle were recovered from the killed militants,” the spokesperson said.
“With this timely and sustained effort, an attempt by the Hizbul Mujahideen to revive militant activities in the Dachan and Marwah areas of Kishtwar has been nipped,” he added.
