Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) are state-owned enterprises. These companies are either owned by the union government, state government or territorial governments. These PSUs carry out recruitment exercises each year through Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE).
Earlier, the examination was conducted only for engineering graduates aspiring to pursue higher education, but after 2012 PSU Recruitment through GATE, the trend took off and the exams scores were accepted by most PSUs as a credible yardstick to screen and hire quality, highly-educated graduates across various engineering disciplines. Only the Tier 1 candidates get selected to various PSUs.
The vacancies filled in these companies through GATE is huge; for instance BSNL hired a record-setting 2,510 GATE qualified candidates in 2017 session of recruitment. There is also a steady increase in the number of recruiting companies. In 2015, more than 27 companies recruited candidates through GATE scorecard. The number grew to more than 40 in 2016. Current figures of PSUs recruiting graduate engineers through GATE stand at 50 plus. Some of the most prominent PSUs include BHEL, GAIL, NHPC, BSNL and DMRC.
The minimum eligibility criterion to be followed by candidates seeking recruitment in PSU through GATE is to appear for the national level entrance exam in their respective branch of study. The PSU may also specify the minimum pass percentage or age limits that must be considered by candidates while applying. A medical examination of the shortlisted candidates is a must for all candidates before recruitment.
Besides GATE, this an individual decision of certain PSUs whether they want to conduct additional tests such as group discussion and personal interview to shortlist candidates. There are some that use only GATE scores, such as BSNL that didnt conduct any interview for its BSNL JTO Recruitment while NPCIL and KRCL further conduct interview for candidates shortlisted based on GATE scores.
