SrinagarThe Jammu and Kashmir High Court on Thursday directed government to file latest status report about accreditation of two food testing labourites in the state with National Accreditation Board of Laboratories (NABL).
Hearing a Public Interest Litigation, a division bench of Chief Justice Badar Durrez Ahmad and Justice Alok Aradhe passed the direction that after being informed that in-terms of previous direction, the concerned department has applied to NABL and the acknowledgement of the board has been received by the department.
Previously the court directed State Food Safety Authorities to ensure that there was adequate lab testing infrastructure in both the laboratories at Srinagar and Jammu and ensure that all labs obtain NABL accreditation to facilitate precise testing.
Counsel for Health & Medical Education Department also submitted that a proposal to finance department for creation of post along with supportive staff has been submitted. However, the counsel submitted that the department has given clearance only creation of Commissioner Food Safety and the office of Commissioner cannot function without the availability of the supportive staff.
He also informed that H&ME department has re-submitted the proposal for creation of supportive staff for Commissioners office which include Private Secretary, Law Officer, Section Officer, Head
Assistant, Senior Assistant, Junior Assistant, Driver and orderlies. The Court was also informed that State Service Selection Board has recommended select list of 16 Food Safety Officers and one Assistant Public Analyst and their appointment order will be issued shortly. The court has also sought report of installation of necessary equipments and functions performed through these equipments in food testing laboratories of Srinagar and Jammu. The court has also been informed that seven mobile labs are presently in place among them three are functioning for Jammu, three for Kashmir and one is functioning of Leh. Court directed the authorities to report the court on next date for proper functioning of these mobile labs. The court was hearing a suo-moto PIL initiated on media reports on adulteration of food items in the State.
