AwantiporaDepartment of Journalism and Mass Communication (DJMC), Islamic University of Science and Technology (IUST) organised an interactive session and guest lecture on How do governments conduct their Public Relations today.
Noted media person of the Kashmir, Nazir Ganaie currently working as Information Officer in J&K Department of Information and Public Relations dealt at length with the theme while talking about the roles and responsibilities of PR Practitioners and PR departments in J&K.
With new trends evolving in the field of Public Relations it is becoming an increasingly challenging job for the PR guys today and more often than not we are faced with situations that require effective crisis communications. Equipping oneself with right knowledge and skills set including the need to possess a calm and patient attitude and is what will take you far in this field, which is growing like its allied sector of advertising, Ganaie said.
Nazir who has previously worked with Kashmir Observer and other prominent organisations encouraged students to network effectively with the right publics out there.
While sharing his experience, he also briefed students on how J&K Information Department was performing its duties in an organised and professional manner he said, PR has ability to shape the perception of people so its the duty of a PR officer to disseminate the credible information as credibility is equally important for journalists as well as PR professionals
Nazir who has served for nine years in the field of journalism also gave an insight to the students about the scope and challenges of contemporary journalism in Kashmir.
Nazir being an experienced information officer can make students have a better understanding of PR and the challenges it brings in a complex scenario like Kashmir, said Dr. Ruheela Hassan, Head of Department, DJMC.
Talking about the session, Monisa Qadri, course coordinator of Public Relations, DJMC said, The lecture was organised to aware students about the daily challenges that a PR practitioner is faced with and how PR campaigns are run in the practical field. This session will go a long way in attracting students towards this career field.
As Nazir has the knowledge about the journalism and PR as well, so he was able to make students understand well about the working of both the fields, she added.
Expressing the satisfaction about the lecture, Sadaf Aijaz, student, DJMC said , it was a very extensive lecture which helped us to have a better understanding of PR and widened our minds about the opportunities we have in the field of mass communication in addition to mere reporting.
