SRINAGAR : Highlighting the importance of Right to Information (RTI) Act, Chief Information Commissioner (CIC), Khurshid Ahmad Ganai, Thursday said that the essence of the Act is to ensure greater transparency, accountability and corruption free governance.
He was speaking at the Round Table Conference on RTI held at Institute of Management & Public Administration (IMPA), Srinagar. He said that RTI Act is not merely a provision but a potent tool that not only strengthens the democracy but promotes good governance by enhancing the citizens ability to participate in the process.
Stressing on a sustained mass awareness on the grassroots level, the CIC said the need of the hour is to educate masses about the importance of the Act. He said it has the potential to enhance efficiency in administration of public authorities, eradicate corruption and promote culture of transparency.
The CIC said that one of the objectives of holding the Round Table conference was to reduce the gap between the information provider and the information seeker.
