Srinagar: Opposing lifting of ban on manufacture and sale and use of above 50 microns in thickness polythene, the Valley Citizen Council (VCC) said it will prove death warrant not only for valley but for whole of Jammu and Kashmir.
Government should withdraw the notification issues recently regarding lifting of ban on polythene as it is death warrant not only for the Valley but for the whole State, VCC General Secretary Imdad Saqi said.
We fervently appeal also to general masses not to use polythene. On our appeal the then Chief Minister in 2005 issues instruction in this regard as the use of polythene is a major cause of pollution in the environment and killing of water bodies, he said.
Saqi said the VCC has also appealed Eco friendly organizations, students, religious and social organisations to voice their concern against this manse and impress upon the government to withdraw the order and impose complete ban on polythene to save environment.
As reports indicate in some other States, use storage and sale of plastic bags of any kind of thickness have been banned. The violators face Rs 1,00,000 fine and possible hall sentence of five years for use of biodegradable bags, he said
When polythene is banned at other tourist destinations, why ban is lifted in our State, the VCC General Secretary asked.
We feel that conspiracy is being hatched to ruin our water bodies and environment to keep tourist away from the Valley, Mr Saqi alleged.
