‘Fresh WD To Hit J&K Today’

SRINAGAR: A fresh Western Disturbance (WD) likely to hit the region on Tuesday which could result in light to moderate rain and snow during the next four days in the state, including Kashmir valley, where weather remained pleasant due to sunshine.

Meanwhile, night temperature remained below normal at majority of the places in Kashmir valley and Ladakh region, while border town of Kargil was the coldest place after mercury dipped and settled at minus 12.8 degree.

However, the mercury witnessed an improvement of about 3 degree from yesterday at Leh and settled at minus 6.4 degree.

A Met department spokesperson told UNI that a fresh WD, which originated from the Arabian sea and is entering the region from Afghanistan and Pakistan, will hit the state tomorrow, which could result in light to moderate rain or snow in the valley.

He said sky will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Leh, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 8 degree and minus 8 degree respectively.

Even though there was further improvement of about two degree in the night temperature at world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, where slopes are still under several feet of snow, it was still the coldest place in the valley. Against minus 7.6 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was minus 6 degree, which is about two notches below normal.

After witnessing some improvement in the night temperature, people woke up to a sunny morning in the summer capital, Srinagar though winds also continued. Against minus 1.3 degree night temperature recorded yesterday, it was 0.9 degree, which is still slightly below normal. But the day temperature was several notches above normal. Yesterday, the day temperature in Srinagar was about three degree above normal.

He said that sky will be partly cloudy during the next 24 hours in Srinagar, where maximum and minimum temperatures will be around 16 degree and zero degree.

World famous health resort of Pahalgam witnessed some improvement in the night temperature though it was still about 2 degree below normal. Against minus 4.5 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature at Pahalgam was minus 3.8 degree.

The mercury at Qazigund, the gateway to Kashmir valley, on Srinagar-Jammu highway, dipped and settled at minus 0.4 degree, against 0.2 degree recorded yesterday.

However, another health resort of Kokernag and Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed some improvement in the night temperature. Against 0.3 degree recorded yesterday, the night temperature was 0.8 degree at Kokernag while mercury surged and settled at minus 1.9 degree, against minus 2.5 degree recorded yesterday.
