Srinagar: An elderly man was seriously injured last evening by speeding sedan on Airport Road in south City’s Peer Bagh locality.

Witnesses said Muhammad Altaf Qureshi, a retired Superintending Engineer, who was coming out of local Masjid after offering Maghrib Salah, was hit by speeding car.

The witnesses said two youth were racing in their luxury cars including Honda City when they lost control and one of the vehicles hit the old man. The impact of the accident was such that the old man was thrown up in the air to several feet before falling on the ground.

He was rushed to SMHS Hospital where his condition was stated to be critical. “His skull and ribs are fractured and he has hemorrhage on both sides. He is presently on ventilator,” said a doctor treating him.

While some accused youth, hailing from the same plush locality were brought to Police Post Humhama for questioning, they were subsequently released.  Police said it was looking for clues.

The locals said the police was trying to hush-up the case as the duo happens to be from well-off families. “In fact the duo was drunk, we could smell it,” the locals said asking Senior Superintendent of Police, Fayaz Ahmed Lone to personally look into the matter.

Meanwhile, the accident news went viral on social media with most of the people cursing the parents of such “spoiled youth”.

Retired civil servant, Irfan Yasin had this to post on his Facebook wall: “One of our relatives was yesterday hit by a speeding vehicle while crossing the road at Peer Bagh after offering his Sham Nimaz at the local Masjid.”

“The fellow is struggling for his life in the local hospital. Apparently the two boys were in a race and one of them hit him and the impact threw him several feet away breaking his skull and ribs. Question is, why do you allow these youngsters to drive if they are unable to control the wicked desire to show off.? Have the parents lost the right as well as the desire of parenting? Why do these novo Rich’s have to announce their arrival in a manner as to endanger lives of others?” Yasin asked.

Reacted Kanwerjeet Singh, “100 billion thought. The parents are supposed to adhere to. Severe matter of concern for a civilized society.”

Omar R Shahdad said: “These half boiled egg hero’s have taken heavy toll of the lives of many pedestrians. We have similar such examples in the past.”

Another netizen Farooq Ahmed commented: “R U talking about Mr Altaf Qureshi Sahib? And the police is still to lay hands on the ‘Khana Mole’ even as somebody has identified him!”
