SRINAGAR: Of late Kashmiris have taken to cricket to exhibit their pain, organizing tournaments in name of those killed by the government forces. Over the years there have been a horde of tournaments in the memory of people killed in the conflict with a telling success. Star XI Cricket Club Handwara have continued on with the trend as they are set to launch a cricket tourney in the memory of their most popular and talented cricket yet: Nayeem Qadir Bhat.
Nayeem would represent Star Eleven as an able all-rounder before making his presence felt in Kashmir Gymkhana Club and Pride Riders. But it was Star XI that was so very dear to him as suggested by his 2014 Facebook post, If I die and go to heaven, Ill put the name of Star Eleven on golden star, So that angels can see, How much Star Eleven means to me.
Nayeem was making inroads in the world of cricket before a bullet from army and police silenced him forever last month when government forces opened fire on protesters who were agitated after the news of alleged molestation of a school girl by an army man spread in the North Kashmirs Handwara town. Handwara cricket lost its face, but his childhood club that meant so much to him has made sure Nayeem might be gone but not forgotten.
The Club has decided to come up with a tournament in the memory of their late player which, according to the organisers, will begin from May 29 under the name Shaheed Nayeem Memorial Gold Cup Cricket Championship 2016.
Nayeem, who was a first year student in Government Degree College Handwara, had shown extra ordinary performance in the state level Under-19 cricket championship besides plying trade for his native club.
The inaugural match of the tournament will be played between Kashmir Gymkhana Reds Srinagar and Murtaza Warriors Srinagar at Government Boys Higher Secondary playground Handwara.
According to the organisers of the tournament, no participation and registration fee is being charged from the teams participating teams in the tournament.
